Audio Stories

Forum #1

8/25/19

Four Kinds of Audio:

  • Voice Overs: At timestamp 5:06 there was a voicemail played from the nurse to the Podcasters dad, Tim. The voicemail was from a nurse who just told Tim he was off the waiting list and he now has an organ donor for a new lung. I love that this voicemail was placed into the podcast because it was such a sentimental moment for everyone involved.
  • Natural Sounds: During the podcast at timestamp 7:46 there was beeping of the hospital monitor and the air breathing machine. This natural sound really made you feel as if you were in the hospital with Tim and it added a lot of emotion into the podcast.
  • Ambient Sounds: There was serveal different ambient sounds in the podcast. For instance at timestamp 5:30 there was music that was played to catch the audiences attention as they told the news about Tim. Also at 16:36 there was intense music that played to make the feeling more dramatic.
  • Interview Clips: Throughout the whole podcast there was several interview clips inserted into the podcast as we heard the story from Tim's point of view and how he felt as he went through his Sarcoidosis journey. For example at timestamp 6:37 and 17:35, these were clips where we heard Tim talk and they really brought more emotion into the story.

Ira Glass' "Moments of Reflection"

In the beginning of the podcast I heard the anecdote easily, as Simon, the podcaster told the story of this dad. He told the story in a sequence of events starting from his father finding out he had Sarcoidosis and then ending when Tim received the lung replacement. After the lung transplant there was a moment of reflection on the whole journey. Tim was asked how he felt and when he finally realized he had a new lung, knowing he would not be sick anymore.
